Rather than trying to have every possible beat on our books - whatever the quality - we only offer beats we know, have fished and provide exceptional chalkstream fishing. This page gives a short description of each fishery.
If you are unsure about which one suits you or you simply would like to talk about some of the best water in the country, please get in touch.
THE RIVER TEST
This private fishery covers some five miles of the middle Test with three long beats, each with multiple carriers. The Field described this piece of water as “one of the premier beats on the premier chalkstream in the world.”
Each of the three beats is substantial: groups of four to six rods normally fish on each of the beats. This estate is a perfect place for entertaining guests; each beat has a hut with running water whilst the middle beat hut has cooking facilities.
Houghton Lodge estate has two beats on the River Test: The Upper Beat, half a mile of carrier, and a lower beat of 300 yards of main river. The beat also has beautiful views across the Test Valley and water meadows. On the bank there is a summer house, both for entertaining & for escaping from a shower. This video gives a bird's eye view of the beat.
Broadlands: Tanyard Beat
The Tanyard beat is approximately a third of a mile of double bank fishing on the main river Test just below Romsey with a backdrop of Broadlands House. This wading and bank beat offers fishing for up to four rods and is approximately a third of a mile of double bank fishing providing excellent sport after brown trout and grayling.
The Freelands beat is situated on the upper Test river just below Chilbolton Common, and is about 800 yards in length. (The beat sits just below the Wherwell Priory and just upstream from the Fullerton and the Leckford Estates.) Freelands has not been fished commercially for over 10 years, but is a family home with beautiful single bank fishing for two rods only.
THE RIVER ITCHEN
This iconic estate includes several prime chalk-stream stretches that provide excellent fly fishing for wild brown trout and grayling. The fishing is always guided by one of our team and apart from the Candover Brook is all wading.
The water is let with high-grade accommodation consisting of (i) a two bedroom flat in the clock tower of a stable courtyard set in spectacular parkland scenery and/or (ii) an attractive garden cottage with one double bed plus further sofa bed.
There are seven named beats on four different stretches of the Itchen or its tributories:
- The River Itchen - The estate has two main river beats at Itchen Stoke; one of the beats includes the Lovington Carrier to the south of the main river. Both main river beats are comparatively wide with wild margins, fished by wading.
- The River Arle - A major tributary of the River Itchen, this is a highly-regarded wading beat just downstream from Alresford. The beat consists of 500 yards of top-rate double bank fishing.
- The Elm Stream - This beat is a slow flowing loop off the main river, between Itchen Abbas and Itchen Stoke.
- The Candover Brook - There are three named beats on the the Candover Brook covering nearly 4,000 yards of relatively wild and challenging fishing. The stream flows through beautiful parkland and attractive water-meadows along the Itchen valley floor.
THE RIVER KENNET
The beats at Denford are largely carriers but include some of the main River Kennet. Waters stretch over two miles allowing plenty of space to wonder whilst remaining relatively close to base.
